Leadership Presence

"The evolving expression of leadership”

Invest Smartly

Leadership is not experienced only through what a leader intends, knows or does. It is also experienced in how leadership comes through—in the choices a leader makes, the way they engage with others, and how they respond to the situations they lead.  As leadership evolves, the demands on a leader change. Responsibilities broaden, relationships shift and what leadership needs to make possible becomes different.

Leadership Presence shapes how leadership is experienced—and influences how people respond, engage and contribute to what becomes possible.

2. What Leadership Presence means

## What Leadership Presence means

Leadership Presence is the evolving expression of leadership.

It is how leadership comes through as a leader develops, navigates different situations and takes on changing responsibilities. It reflects not only what a leader intends, but how their leadership is expressed in the situations they lead.

Leadership Presence is not a fixed personal quality or a prescribed way of showing up. It evolves as the leader evolves and as their understanding of what leadership requires expands.

### More than how a leader appears

Leadership Presence is often associated with confidence, communication, composure or the ability to command attention. These may influence how leadership is experienced, but they do not, on their own, define Leadership Presence.

The deeper question is how leadership comes through in a particular situation—and whether its expression reflects what that situation calls for.

3 — Why Leadership Presence matters as leadership evolves

Why Leadership Presence matters as leadership evolves ?

As leadership evolves, what is required of a leader changes.  The experience and expertise that served a leader well in one role may not be sufficient in another. Responsibilities broaden, decisions carry wider consequences, and relationships become more complex.

What worked before may still have value. But it may need to be expressed differently as the demands of leadership change.

The question is not simply whether a leader can do more. It is whether their leadership can evolve to meet what is now required.

Leadership Presence matters because it brings attention to this relationship between the changing demands of leadership and the leader's continuing development.

Leadership Presence develops from the inside and is expressed through every interaction

Leadership Presence is shaped by the relationship between what develops within a leader and how their leadership comes through in the situations they lead.

As leaders deepen their self-awareness, understanding, judgement and capacity, they may begin to see situations differently, recognise new possibilities and make different choices about how they lead.

These developments find expression in decisions, conversations, relationships and interactions. Others experience that expression from their own perspectives and within the context of their expectations, relationships and circumstances.

Their responses can offer valuable information, but they are not the whole story. Reflection on one's own experience, the perspectives of others and the demands of the situation can together create opportunities for further learning and development.

**Leadership Presence is neither simply an inner quality nor an outward impression. It is the evolving expression of leadership, shaped through the relationship between the leader, how their leadership comes through and how it is experienced by others.**

Section 5 — Leadership Presence in practice

\## Leadership Presence in practice:  Leadership does not come through in the same way in every situation.

A situation that calls for clarity and direction may, in another context, call for listening, shared exploration or the ability to bring different perspectives together. At times, leadership requires conviction and decisive action. At others, it requires openness, restraint or the willingness to reconsider an established view.

The challenge is not to adopt a different style for every situation. It is to recognise what the situation calls for, understand what it asks of your leadership, and develop the capacity and judgement to respond consciously.

### As the scope of leadership expands:   As leaders take on broader responsibilities, the focus of their contribution can change.

Leadership may increasingly involve working beyond individual expertise, creating shared ownership, navigating competing perspectives and contributing to outcomes that extend beyond one's immediate team or area of responsibility.

The question can expand from what I can achieve through my own contribution to what we can make possible together—and how my leadership can contribute to the wider organisation and its purpose.  As the scope of leadership expands, the demands on the leader may change too. What served them well before remains valuable, but may need to be complemented by new perspectives, greater capacity and different ways of contributing.

Expanding leadership impact

Section 6 — Developing Leadership Presence

Developing Leadership Presence : begins with becoming more attentive to the relationship between the leader, the situations they lead and how their leadership comes through.

Through reflection, coaching inquiry and engagement with real leadership situations, leaders can examine established patterns, consider different perspectives and explore what their evolving responsibilities may require of them.

Development is not about becoming someone else or adopting a prescribed way of showing up. It is about expanding the understanding, judgement and capacity from which leadership is expressed.  As leaders develop, they can gain greater awareness and choice in how they lead, engage with others and contribute to increasingly complex situations.

"The intention is not to perfect a fixed image of leadership, but to expand what a leader is able to bring to the situations they lead—and what becomes possible through their leadership."
